A 67-year-old Portland man stopped for an unlit license plate turned out to be driving while intoxicated after breaking up with his girlfriend, according to Middletown Police.

On Jan. 14 at 9:40 p.m., George E. Olson, 67, of Middle Haddam Road, Portland, was driving a Lexus on Broad Street with a non-working light over the rear marker plate.

The report says he hesitated for several seconds then accelerated, turning left onto Washington Street. Once stopped, Olson said, “you caught me at a bad time, I just broke up with my girlfriend,” the report says, while smelling of alcohol and fumbling with his wallet.

He told police he was coming from a bar and had consumed four scotches, stumbled and couldn’t walk well, saying, “I don’t think I’ll be able to pass your tests.” He refused to take a blood-alcohol test, police say, and had been charged with DUI in 2004.

He was charged with operation of an unregistered vehicle, improper use of marker plate, driving under the influence and failure to have tail lamps.
