Martin Luther King Jr. Day has been a federal holiday since 1986, and most government employees have the day off.
Schools are a different story. Many of them close for the day — with some encouraging students to attend town events marking the holiday. Others choose to stay open to educate students about Martin Luther King Jr.
Most businesses are open, but banks, post offices and libraries are generally closed.
