A 26-year-old New York man is in custody after police say he entered a family's home in the middle of the night, terrifying a couple and their two sleeping children, according to Middletown Police.
On Sept. 15 at 4:13 a.m., Mohammed N. Islam, 26, of West 18th Street, New York, N.Y., was at a home on Bridge Street when officers received an unwanted person call.
The report says Islam approached officers while standing with another man and woman, saying he was glad they were there "because he has to make sure the other two individuals on the porch were safe."
He smelled strongly of alcohol and had to repeat his statement several times, the report indicates. The man and woman live at the home and said they were sleeping at 4:15 a.m. when they were awoken by Islam standing in their bedroom near the bed, asking, "Is everyone OK? Is everyone safe?"
They asked him to leave and called 911, the report says, and he left but went into their 14-year-old son's room, they asked him to leave and he went into the kitchen and tried to enter the basement. He walked past the 11-year-old on the couch sleeping, the report says then sat on the front porch.
Outside the house, police say, the couple realized Islam had on their son's sweatshirt, so he handed it back. Islam told officers he was "part of a democratic group that ensured people were safe."
The report says he couldn't say how many drinks he had had, saying between one and four each time officers queried him. He told police he lived on Cromwell Hill Drive in Cromwell and couldn't remember any names or numbers of Connecticut friends who could identify him.
He was charged with sixth-degree larceny and second-degree burglary and is being held on $50,000 bond because he has no family in Connecticut, an out-of-state license and no way to confirm his claims of a Cromwell address, the report says.
