A 33-year-old city man made off with more than $460 worth of chewing gum and caffeinated soft drinks from a Main Street pharmacy, intent on selling the pilfered goods to support his drug habit, according to Middletown Police.

On Dec. 6 at 3:07 p.m., police were called to Rite Aid for a shoplifter running towards College Street. Daniel P. Adams, 33, of Maple Place was found with a drug needle, the report says, and he told police he was addicted to drugs.

The report says that earlier a clerk saw Adams ask a cashier for two empty bags, leave the store, return, then fill a basket with $269.48 worth of gum three-packs, go to one of the aisles and dump it all into a garbage bag.

Surveillance later showed Adams had additionally taken two baskets full of Red Bull, worth $195.27, and left them the front lobby area, so he could grab them upon exiting the store, the report says.

He was charged with fifth-degree larceny and use of drug paraphernalia.
